Zakat Selangor Cares: LZS Allocates RM77.7 Million to Assist Asnaf and Affected Groups

SHAH ALAM, 5 December 2022Lembaga Zakat Selangor (LZS) has allocated RM77.7 million in zakat distribution through 10 assistance initiatives under Zakat Selangor Peduli (ZSP) to support asnaf and the B40 and M40 groups, including institutions in Selangor affected by post-COVID-19 pandemic challenges and last year’s floods.

Targeted zakat distribution prioritizes reducing the cost of living burden due to inflation among fakir, miskin, and mualaf asnaf, while also supporting the recovery of institutions in Selangor.

The ZSP initiatives have been implemented gradually from October to December.

Through ZSP, LZS has allocated RM33.5 million for Special Living Needs Assistance (Inflation) to 67,000 recipients among fakir, miskin, and mualaf asnaf. This one-off RM500 aid is an additional supplement to existing assistance to help beneficiaries cope with the current increase in living costs. The aid has been credited from today to the bank accounts of registered asnaf with LZS.

Meanwhile, RM2.0 million has been allocated to ensure no asnaf goes hungry, through Monthly Food Assistance.

To ease the educational expenses of B40 and M40 groups who are not asnaf, RM20.0 million under ZSP is distributed through the Sumbangan Pendidikan Zakat Anak Selangor (SPZAS) for primary, secondary, and higher education (IPT) students. This zakat contribution benefits 20,000 recipients, ensuring the smooth continuation of studies and learning for B40 and M40 children and students.

Additionally, ZSP has allocated RM9.95 million to meet the educational needs of Huffaz students in Selangor, benefiting up to 5,300 students.

To support the recovery of affected institutions, LZS also assisted educational institutions by allocating RM10.0 million to Sekolah Rendah Agama (SRA) and Kelas Agama dan Fardu Ain (KAFA) under Jabatan Agama Islam Selangor (JAIS) to replace old school furniture. A further RM1.0 million was allocated to support the construction savings for Sekolah Agama Rendah (SAR) KAFA Integrasi Puncak Alam.

An additional RM430,000 was provided for the disposal of Qur’an copies and religious books damaged during the 2021 floods.

Meanwhile, RM180,000 was allocated to JAIS for the purchase of personal protective equipment (PPE) for personnel handling COVID-19 funerals in the state, supporting the management of COVID-19 burials according to standard operating procedures (SOP) and fulfilling the requirements of Fardu Kifayah.

ZSP allocations were also used to upgrade deteriorated and inadequate facilities, including RM500,000 for the upgrade of Balai Islam Pulau Ketam, which serves as a center for da’wah activities for the local Muslim and non-Muslim community and surrounding areas, and RM180,000 for the upgrade of the Visitor Hall at Ampang Hospital.

For information, ZSP was introduced in 2021 to provide targeted assistance aimed at supporting asnaf and affected B40 groups following the COVID-19 pandemic, with zakat distribution amounting to RM62.5 million.
