Viral Single Mothers: LZS Confirms Two of Them Are Asnaf

SHAH ALAM, 4 May 2021 – The Selangor Zakat Board (LZS) has confirmed that two of the single mothers who claimed not to have received assistance from any agency previously are indeed zakat asnaf.

According to LZS Chief Executive Officer, Saipolyazan M. Yusop, at a press conference, the first single mother is a registered miskin asnaf with LZS and continues to receive zakat aid. She has three dependents and receives various forms of assistance, including monthly financial aid, educational support, living expense debt assistance, and Hari Raya aid.

“The family of this single mother also receives rental assistance, which is funded by LZS until December 2021. Meanwhile, the second single mother was a recipient of Baitulmal MAIWP aid from 2012 to 2017. According to LZS records, she received assistance to settle outstanding rent in 2017 from LZS. No other applications have been made since then.”

The third mother is not considered a single mother, as she is still married. She recently submitted an application to register as fakir and miskin asnaf, but the documents were incomplete because divorce papers were not provided.

“LZS takes such claims seriously, as the organization ensures that asnaf in Selangor are properly assisted through the support of 2,000 assistant amils across Selangor.”

“Collaboration from all parties is highly appreciated, especially during the Covid-19 pandemic, as it ensures mutual support and completeness of assistance.”

As of April 2021, LZS has assisted 58,714 fakir and miskin families and 5,808 mualaf individuals.

Among them, 17,535 single mothers have benefited from zakat this year. Single mothers are defined as women who raise and care for their children alone due to divorce, death, or abandonment by their spouse.
