SHAH ALAM, 13 March 2024 – His Royal Highness the Sultan of Selangor, Sultan Sharafuddin Idris Shah Al-Haj, today launched the Pearl Jubilee Celebration of the 30th Anniversary of Lembaga Zakat Selangor (LZS) to commemorate three decades of LZS as an institution leading changes in zakat management in Selangor.
At 30 years old, LZS continues to be regarded as an institution entrusted with facilitating zakat contributors and supporting the asnaf (eligible zakat recipients) in Selangor.
Over this period, LZS has undergone several evolutions to ensure its goal of providing the best services in zakat collection and distribution to the Muslim community in the state of Selangor is achieved.
It started as the Zakat Collection Centre (PPZ-MAIS) which focused on collecting zakat, then changed its name to Selangor Zakat Centre (PZS-MAIS) and was given the mandate to carry out zakat distribution, which was previously the responsibility of Baitulmal.
In 2006, LZS was registered under the Trustees (Incorporation) Act 1952 and renamed Lembaga Zakat Selangor (LZS) in line with its expanded responsibility in managing zakat collection and distribution.
During its 30 years of operation, LZS has increased zakat collection in Selangor from RM15.9 million to RM1.07 billion in 2022, equivalent to an annual growth rate of 17.7%.
Meanwhile, zakat distribution over the 30-year period has also increased from RM16.3 million to RM1.05 billion in 2022, representing an annual growth rate of 18%.
Overall, LZS has collected and distributed more than RM10.5 billion over 30 years to ease the burden of the asnaf. This includes initiatives to develop the asnaf community in Selangor so they are not perpetual zakat recipients and can achieve financial independence for themselves and their families.
In conjunction with LZS’s Pearl Jubilee Anniversary celebration, various exciting programs and activities have been arranged throughout the year specifically for zakat contributors, the asnaf, and the wider community. Information about these programs and activities will be announced through LZS’s official social media channels.
