Qatar Delegation Visits Zakat Institutions: Explore Zakat Management in Malaysia

KUALA LUMPUR, 23 April 2024 – A delegation of 10 senior officials from the Ministry of Awqaf and Islamic Affairs, Government of Qatar, visited zakat institutions in Malaysia to exchange views on zakat management.

The delegation, led by the Director of the Zakat Affairs Department, Government of Qatar, Tuan Saad Omran al-Kuwairi, visited the Zakat Collection Centre of the Federal Territory Islamic Religious Council for a session to share experiences in zakat management in Malaysia, particularly at Lembaga Zakat Selangor (LZS) and PPZ.

LZS Chief Executive Officer, Mohd Sabirin Mohd Sarbini, in his welcoming speech, expressed LZS’s excitement for the delegation’s visit. He hoped that this visit would strengthen a meaningful Government to Government (G2) relationship through sessions on zakat management, mutual exchange of views and experiences, as well as exploring strategic cooperation, innovation, and friendship between the two countries.

During the visit, the delegation was briefed on LZS’s experience-sharing by Head of Corporate Strategy Division, Kamarulzaman Omar, who emphasized the need to adapt to technology to ensure asnaf needs are met through effective zakat distribution, and that zakat collection can be continuously improved to assist more asnaf.

The launch ceremony was officiated by Chairman of the Selangor Islamic Religious Council (MAIS), Tan Sri Datuk Seri Abdul Aziz Mohd Yusof, in front of 250 participants of MZN.

The book launched is a compilation of zakat da’wah cartoons previously featured on LZS’s official social media. Using a lighthearted cartoon approach, LZS sees this as an effective method to convey zakat messages to the public.

This approach is hoped to attract various groups, especially the younger generation, to better understand and appreciate the concept and importance of zakat.

Besides the book launch, the MZN program also featured various presentations and discussions on current zakat issues at the regional level. The program was attended by zakat experts from several countries who shared their insights and experiences in strengthening zakat institutions.

LZS hopes that with the launch of this book and programs like MZN, public awareness and understanding of zakat will continue to grow, thereby supporting the asnaf who are in need.

Also present at the program were Deputy Chairman of LZS, Tan Sri Dato’ Setia Ambrin Buang, Selangor Mufti, Dato’ Setia Profesor Madya Dr. Anhar Opir, and Chief Operations Officer of LZS, Ahmad Fadhil Hassan.
