An emergency call was received at a Zakat Selangor branch when a married couple arrived with their small child, carrying only a few bags. They had just been evicted from their family home and had nowhere else to go.
The case was immediately escalated to Zakat Selangor’s Skuad Saidina Umar (SSU), who acted swiftly to assess the situation. Investigations revealed that the family were new converts to Islam, having embraced the faith just last year.
A month earlier, the husband had been involved in a serious road accident that resulted in severe injuries, including fractures to his leg and pelvis. The injuries left him unable to work and provide for his family.
As his condition worsened, tensions arose with family members who were not Muslim. His inability to earn an income was perceived as a burden, ultimately leading to the family being forced out of their home.
With his health still fragile and no place to seek refuge, the family turned to Zakat Selangor confused, frightened and uncertain about their future.
Recognising the urgency of the situation, Zakat Selangor immediately arranged temporary accommodation to ensure the family was not left without shelter, while longer-term housing arrangements were being prepared.
As Ramadan draws to a close and many prepare to celebrate Syawal with joy, there remain those who continue to face profound hardship. It is in moments like these that zakat fulfils its role as protection, compassion and hope.
Zakat Selangor remains committed to standing alongside those who are tested and marginalised, because every individual deserves care, dignity and a sense of belonging, especially during this blessed season.
