A Small Warung: The Story of an Orang Asli Muslimah

Rahmah’s journey into Islam was one of quiet resilience and unwavering faith. In the early days, she chose to keep her conversion private, aware that her parents would struggle to understand her decision. When they eventually found out, their response was distant and restrained. Yet Rahmah met this moment not with anger, but with patience. She continued to honour her parents, nurturing the relationship with compassion and perseverance. In time, through love and sincere prayers, her parents came to accept her choice with open hearts.

Rahmah began her working life in a small eatery before moving on to a tent company, where she worked diligently for nearly 15 years. With the encouragement of her family, she eventually took a bold step forward, opening her own warung in Kampung Orang Asli Sungai Bumbun.

In 2014, Rahmah started her journey as a nasi lemak vendor alongside her beloved husband. The challenges intensified during the Movement Control Order (PKP), prompting her to adapt by preparing hot meals at night to sustain the family’s livelihood. Behind her warm smile, Rahmah endured significant health challenges, including diabetes, high blood pressure and chronic knee pain. Yet her determination never faltered.

Driven by purpose, Rahmah was committed to providing halal food options to the Orang Asli community in her village where access to Muslim food was limited. Her warung soon became more than a place of business; it became a source of trust and connection within the community.

Beyond sustaining her family, Rahmah continues to give back. She is often entrusted by agencies such as the Jabatan Kemajuan Orang Asli (JAKOA) and local schools to prepare and distribute iftar meals. She is also regularly asked to help deliver hot food to underprivileged communities. Her journey of faith has inspired several of her younger siblings to embrace Islam as well.

Rahmah is not only an entrepreneur. She is a bridge between communities, a quiet advocate of compassion and a living example of da’wah through action, bringing guidance, service and hope to her village.
