Introduction to Asnaf Zakat

The scope of zakat distribution of the Lembaga Zakat Selangor (MAIS) is based on what has been set by syara '. Asnaf is as described in Surah At-Taubah verse 60.

۞ إِنَّمَا ٱلصَّدَقَٰتُ لِلْفُقَرَآءِ وَٱلْمَسَٰكِينِ وَٱلْعَٰمِلِينَ عَلَيْهَا وَٱلْمُؤَلَّفَةِ قُلُوبُهُمْ وَفِى ٱلرِّقَابِ وَٱلْغَٰرِمِينَ وَفِى سَبِيلِ ٱللَّهِ وَٱبْنِ ٱلسَّبِيلِ ۖ فَرِيضَةًۭ مِّنَ ٱللَّهِ ۗ وَٱللَّهُ عَلِيمٌ حَكِيمٌۭ ۝٦٠

“Zakah expenditures are only for the poor and for the needy and for those employed for it and for bringing hearts together and for freeing captives [or slaves] and for those in debt and for the cause of Allah and for the traveler - an obligation by Allah. And Allah is Knowing and Wise”
(Surah at-Tawbah : verse 60)

Zakat Distribution Beneficiary Criteria (Haddul Kifayah)

Each applicant is evaluated according to the Haddul Kifayah provided

There are 8 Asnaf Zakat

Asnaf Faqr

Asnaf Faqr is a Muslim who does not have property or income, or has property or income but does not reach 50 percent of the haddul kifayah of his self and dependents.

Asnaf Miskin

Asnaf Miskin is a Muslim who owns property or income that can only accommodate over 50 percent of his own needs and dependents but still has inadequate haddul kifayah.

Asnaf Amil

Amil is a party appointed by the Majlis Agama Islam Selangor (MAIS) to represent DYMM Sultan to carry out zakat management duties covering collection and distribution.

Asnaf Muallaf

Muallaf is a person who has just embraced Islam or a person who heart is softened among the ones who not converted yet.

Asnaf Riqab

Riqab is a person who is bound by an authority or condition that becomes a barrier to him to live a better life.

Asnaf Fisabilillah

Fisabilillah is a struggle, effort and activity that aims to uphold and defend the religion of Allah.

Asnaf Gharimin

Gharimin is a Muslim who owes to fulfill their own basic needs and dependent or the community interests but has no ability to pay them.

Muslims who owes to fulfill the basic needs of their own or dependent and also those who are indebted to solve community problems and require:

  • The debtor could not pay his debt
  • The debt must obey the obligations of syarak.
  • Debt has reached its limit to be paid.

Asnaf Ibnu Sabil

Ibn Sabil is a Muslim who runs out of expense when traveling or on a journey that bring benefits and in accordance with Hukum Syarak, provided:

  • The supply stopped during the journey
  • Can not utilize his property to continue his journey.
  • Need basic amenities during the travel problems.
  • Left behind during the journey.
